I've read it may take up to 30 washes to eliminate some of the chemical "color stay" ingredients found in laundry detergent. The NIH has a fabulous feature on their site to investigate chemicals and their safety. Sometimes it can be a bit difficult to decipher, but your worth it! Also visit soundearth.com/Reference for more information on chemicals.
